Cartoon characters that made you realise 'huh, bit gay actually'
Or Bi, Pan or Just Some Real Fucking Feelings
Recently, I was hungover and thoroughly enjoying the Underworld movies (you know, the films where Kate Beckinsale is a hot gothic Vampire). During a sex scene between Selene (Kate Beckinsale) and Michael (Scott Speedman), I turned to my friend and confidently said, “Who is even looking at him? Like, I remember this scene from when I was a kid and always thought Selene is a goddess - you can do better hon, pick me!!”
My (straight) friend replied “I’m looking at him, Jade. Because I’m not gay like you”. And thus, the long term inside joke ‘Jade’s gay moments’ were born.
It got me thinking, how many other little gay clues, in the form of fictional characters, were sprinkled throughout my childhood that I completely missed? For your queer (and perhaps straight) enjoyment, here are a few cartoon babes I’ve realised warmed my little gay heart (and other places).
Esmeralda (Hunchback of Notre Dame)
For the longest time I thought I wanted to be Esmeralda. She’s smart, confident, an excellent dancer, sweet and absolutely fearless. But I don’t want to be her, I was just mesmerized with her. Not in a creepy Frollo way (honestly, rewatch this film and realise how terrifying he is), but like all of the men in that film, I fell in love with her when she did that scarf dance and to this day, I want that scarf so bad, it’s so chic.
The sarcasm. The sass. And the style? Amazing.
She doesn’t have time for those hero types - action speaks louder than words, especially if you’ve already sold your soul to Hades for someone. Meg is a real pessimist, we have that in common. And like me, she ‘won’t say she’s in love’ and is fighting with her heart (a.k.a ignoring red flags) when falling for someone.
Are we meant to be? Probably.
Shego (Kim Possible)
Much like Meg, she’s sarcastic and witty, but she’s got that element of danger to her (hello green fireball fists!) so that’s a win already.
Queer women everywhere have shipped KP and Shego for years, so this shouldn’t really be a surprise for anyone. I have no idea why she is a sidekick to that blue guy when she could be running her own show (did I miss that somewhere?) but hey Shego girl, call me beep me if you wanna reach me.
There are more queer icons that gave us some #feels growing up and these are just a small piece of a delicious rainbow pastry. Who were your faves? Who ya fuckin'?
